Adjustment of Automatic Switching the Output IP-Streams of SL NEO Main and Backup Servers

Backup of playout channels is implemented with the aid of synchronous operation of a pair of SL NEO servers: the main server and the backup server. The main server operates in the normal mode, the backup server constantly synchronizes all its playlists with the main server with a precision of up to a few frames. The detailed information about synchronization of playlists is here.

In the scheme with using the analogue or SDI signals, you need an external router that will switch the signals from the main or the backup semi-kit in case of a wreck.

In the scheme with using the transport IP-streams it is also possible to use the external IP-router for the transition to the backup, nevertheless, SL NEO platform server software contains the mechanism that allows the user to automatically send the stream to the corresponding multicast-address from the backup server, in case of disappearing the output stream from the main server.

The function of reserving the output streams is realized in the following way: the parameters of IP-addresses and ports for the output transport streams of the main and the backup servers are configured identically, in the regular mode the main server forms the stream, the backup server synchronously plays back the backup playlist and forms its own stream, but doesn’t send it to the network. The playout service of the backup server constantly analyses the condition of the similar playout service of the main server. In case of a failure in work of the service and disappearance of the stream from the main server, the backup server turns on broadcasting to the network onto the same addresses and ports. After restoring the stream from the main server, the backup server stops broadcasting to the network and switches to the “waiting” mode.

The main server doesn’t require additional adjustments, the procedure of configuring synchronization of the playout service of the backup server is implemented from the control panel - Administrator Control Panel, when the server software is in work. Login to the console is implemented locally from the server, or from any machine in the network by the address http://ip_address:7901. You should login to the control console as an administrator.

Configuring Synchronization of the Output Playout Service of the Backup Server from the Main Server

After login to the backup server control console, select Manage from the left-hand menu, find the tab Video IO Boards, which contains settings of parameters of output streams. In the window Lan Interfaces/Ethernet Adaptor find the corresponding Payout service and choose the field with the stream parameters - MPEG2TS/IP and then press Edit.

In the opened window Configure Service choose the tab IP Parameters and enter the parameters of addresses, protocols and ports for the output stream - the same that are set on the main server.

In the field Multicast IF you should specify the physical IP address of the network adaptor of the backup server, from which it implements forming the multicast-traffic.

In the field Master Unit IP enter the physical IP address of the network port of the main server, connected to the control network (in case, if you use separate Ethernet-ports for management and generation of transport streams).

In the field Name enter the name of the Playout service of the main server, which is responsible for generation of the stream, or choose the service from the list Server List by the button ... The condition of the given service will be constantly monitored by the backup server for the purpose of correctness of functioning and generation of IP-traffic.

Implement the same procedure for all other playout channels.

After the end of configuring, press Apply Changes in the upper section of the control console window. The playout channel will be reloaded, playback on the backup server will be suspended.

This mode is possible only in the backup scheme N+N (complete 100% duplication of servers and playout channels).

You can check the correctness of settings with the help of VLC Player. For receiving the UDP multicast stream, you should enter udp://@multicast_ip:port in the VLC settings on the receiving side.

For the correct functioning of a broadcast system, you should also configure the following functions:
