How to Setup a Set of SL NEO DEMO Server and Client Software? 

Skylark SL NEO software installation process is simple and standard. The setup.exe file is provided on a CD/DVD/Flash drive or is loaded from the Internet. The demo-version is sent on demand, address to A single installation file contains a full set of server and client software and the entire necessary selection of encoder/decoders. SL NEO platform software is operating under Windows 7 SP1 (32 or 64 bit) or Windows 2008 Server.


Before the beginning of the software installation process, ensure that all necessary drivers for the hardware components (I/O boards, control ports) are installed and work properly.

exclamation(1).pngThere is no need in additional installation of encoders/decoders into the system; everything you need is contained in the single SL NEO platform software setup file. 

The system requirements for software installation are described >hereYou should implement the SL NEO software installation as an administrator. Initial installation requirements:

-         Static IP address of the network adapter, cable connection to the local network;

-         Absence of antivirus software on the server or firewalls between the server and the client stations;

-         Proper work of the network infrastructure, efficient disk subsystem;

-         Third-party software products must not function simultaneously with SL NEO software.

There are several restrictions in the demo version: the inscription "SL NEO Media Platform" on the output picture during playout or recording; Transfer Manager Software demo-version transfers files with duration not more than eight minutes. The inscription "Demo Mode" periodically appears in the Air Manager and News Cut applications (duration of the imported files is also limited to 8 minutes).


Persons wishing to test SL NEO platform software products in full may have the temporary license for 3 months. To get the temporary key, you should pass a very simple procedure of software activation: after the installation and setting the SL NEO software on the servers and client stations, send us the Machine Code for every computer with the installed server or client SL NEO software. Preparation, Installation, First Launch

Turning off the Windows 7 User Account Control (UAC); turning off the services and other settings

Before the installation of SL NEO software you should turn off the UAC of Windows 7, and then restart your computer. After that you can start the installation. 


If you use Windows 7/2008, we recommend turning off the Windows Search service (disk indexing), automatic defragmentation on schedule, and the Windows automatic updating service. It is necessary to turn on the "high production" powering mode with parameters that don’t allow disk stop or turning off the monitor; you should also turn off the power saving mode in the network adapter settings. All these actions will help you to reduce the risk of brakes during round-the-clock work of the server.

License Agreement 

In the first stage of setup, read the Licensing Agreement carefully. If you do not agree to the conditions of the Agreement, you do not have the right to set up or use Skylark Technology, Inc.’s software products in any manner whatsoever. 

Necessary free disk space

C:\Program Files\SL NEO Media Platform or C:\Program Files (x86)\SL NEO Media Platform – the folder that contains the set of the SL NEO server and client software after the end of the installation. Necessary space on the system disk for the software installation is about 100 mb (this space doesn’t include the size of the log-files that may demand extra space – about 100 mb per day if the server works twenty-four-hour).


For playout/record while you test the software you may use the disk C:; for speed enhancing and implementing the operations with HD content, we recommend using the separate RAID-array with not less than 4 disks of 10 or 5 levels. 


After installation, six icons appear on the desktop: 

-         SLNEOIcons.jpgSL NEO Media Server – an icon for the launch and shutdown of the SL NEO platform server software.

-         Transfer Manager – a software module that provides automatic media file and metadata transfer between the production and broadcasting complexes’ assemblies (servers, NLE, work stations).

-         Easy Muxer - a multiplexer/demultiplexer of transport streams with the function of Time-Delay for TS.

-         Air Manager – the main client application for management of the record/playout channels, creating graphics, media data management, etc.

-         Multiscreen – the client application: a control multi-screen for I/O signals of SL NEO servers in the general network.

-         News Cut – a client application for non-linear editing at the network work stations using proxy copies, without copying media files to the editing stations and back to the server.

First Launch, Express Configuration of the Server and Client Software after the Installation

First you should run the server module SL NEO Media Server (see the icon on the desktop).

exclamation(1).pngIf it is the first launch of the server software on the machine, the single-step configuration Wizard will help you to choose and configure all necessary hardware and software components of the SL NEO server. 

The first step of the server configuration Wizard is the choice of the I/O audio/video board (or interface)

The first Wizard window "Video IO Boards" is intended to choose the I/O boards or/and interfaces that will be drawn into the server’s work. You should define the number of the channels and choose from the list those devices that exist in the system and are supported by all necessary codecs.


If there are no specialized boards in the system, you may choose the option "Standard Computer Monitors" for displaying the output program in the window on the PC monitor. If there is a possibility to accept the IP-stream by another machine, you may choose the option "LAN Interfaces" and configure MPEG-2/H.264 UDP broadcasting to the network for the next signal receiving by the VLC program. If you have a tape recorder with IEEE1394 interface, you may use it as a signal source and DV-Video converter (in this case you should choose the option "FireWire Interfaces"). 



The second step is to indicate the way to the server database or to the folder from which you will implement playout

Why is it a database, and not just a folder with media-files ?


Our long experience of development and communicating with Windows didn’t give us any reasons to doubt its reliability, but for perfect twenty-four-hour work of on-line record and playback processes, while working with media-files, this OS (as, however, any other system) proved to be not quite adapted.


As a result, we have developed a system that allows users to avoid the existing OS restrictions. Another goal is to make possible interaction of users with materials/clips, and not with files at the disk, without wasting time on finding out questions: which folder contains the material, what will happen to the broadcast in case of moving the file to another folder, how to start watching material right after the start of recording, how to view comments and other attributes, how to organize viewing one material simultaneously for several network users without "brakes" and harm to the on-air broadcasting?


For reliable and comfort work with content we’ve created a special service - SL NEO server database, a server module that implements the function of a specialized database for the content. This service allows storing attributes (metadata) for the audio/video/graphic materials and providing users with a set of services for the content management (search by the attributes, key frames, setting the "lifetime" etc.), implementing the automated import and export of materials to/from the server storage, with or without recoding. 


The key advantage of using the SL NEO platform database is using the one cached connection to the local RAID-array of the server, meanwhile, all the recording/playout services and all network users’ requests are implemented only through this connection. As a result, it excludes using the Net Bios Windows and all artifacts, connected with using the SMB protocol and "shared" folders, and necessity of connecting the "network disks". Users work not with the OS files, but with "clips" (actually, they work with proxy-copies of materials, viewing and editing them), so the additional loading on the network and disk arrays becomes minimal. 


We don’t use MS SQL in our solution, so there’s no need to install any additional software components.

The third step is configuration of VTR for recording from tapes

The configuration consists in specifying the server control port which is connected to the tape-recorder (RS-232/422 or IEEE1394). We have disabled on-air broadcasting directly from tapes – we don’t support this technology since it’s no longer relevant. 

The final step is completion of configuration and start of the server software



After the start of server software an icon that displays the server software activity will appear at the Windows task bar. 

-         The SLNEO Tray Icon.jpgblue color of the icon means that all configured server software modules are functioning. 

-         The red color of the icon warns that the software loader works, but the other server modules are stopped.

The right click on the icon activates a menu, where you can run and stop server program modules. 

The main commands of the administrative menu of the server

-         Start Server – launches the SL NEO server software modules that have been previously configured.

-         Stop Server – stops the SL NEO server software modules.

-         Administrator Control Panel - the control web-console of the server. It is launched when the server software is functioning.

After the start of the server software you may launch the client applications on the server and on the client stations. 

Start of the client software

First you should launch the main client application Air Manager. The application is already configured and ready to work. The window Media Browser should display the server database directory tree with clips; when click on the clip, it should be displayed in the window File Monitor, the playlists windows should be active. To playback the clip you should drag it to the playlist window CAST1 and press PLAY in the Top-menu.
