SL NEO Compressed Video Playout, Recording & Local Insertions

Local Insertions & Ad Replacement
High-Density Performance
Flexible Re-Encoding Modes
Optimized for Splicing Workflows
Broadcast-ready without re-encoding

Overview

SL NEO Compressed Video Playout, Recording & Local Insertions is a software-defined platform for operating precompressed MPEG-TS and IP channels without decoding and re-encoding the video stream. It supports scheduled playout, live and file-based content, recording, local program replacement, and advertising insertion within a unified broadcast workflow.

The platform works directly with compressed transport streams, helping preserve original video quality while reducing processing requirements and latency. It supports MPEG-TS over IP and ASI workflows, multiple services and programs, SCTE signaling, and automated switching between scheduled content, live sources, and local insertions.

Operators can build and manage playlists, record incoming transport streams, perform regional or local content replacement, and trigger advertising or program insertions based on schedules, SCTE markers, or external control commands.

As part of the SL NEO Media Platform, Compressed Video Playout, Recording & Local Insertions integrates with automation, monitoring, transport-stream processing, redundancy, and distribution workflows for broadcast, cable, IPTV, OTT, and regional channel operations.

Highlights

Compressed Video Playout

Play pre-encoded media directly from files or live inputs, minimizing processing latency and preserving original quality.
Local Insertions & Ad Replacement
Insert local ads, promos, or regional content into live streams using SCTE-35 cues, playlists, or manual triggers.
Live Pass-Through & File Intermixing
Seamlessly combine live compressed streams with file-based content within a single playlist.
Flexible Re-Encoding Modes
Operate in no re-encoding, GOP-boundary minimal re-encoding, or full re-encoding modes depending on workflow needs.
IP-Optimized Architecture
Designed for cloud, remote playout, and OTT environments with native IP input/output support.
High-Density Performance
Eliminates re-encoding to maximize channel density and reduce CPU load, enabling more streams on the same hardware.
Encoder Independence
Allows customers to use their own encoders and custom compression settings by working directly with precompressed content.

Workflow

End-to-end channel processing in compressed domain — enabling low latency, high efficiency, and cost-effective operation for telecom and broadcast workflows.

Ingest

The system ingests compressed video streams from multiple sources:

▶ IP: UDP, RTP, SRT, RIST, Zixi
▶ OTT: HLS, MPEG-DASH
▶ DVB / ASI and file-based MPEG-TS

All signals are accepted without decoding or transcoding.

Compressed Processing

Processing is performed directly in the transport stream:

▶ SCTE-35 / SCTE-104 cue handling
▶ PID filtering and remapping
▶ PSI/SI processing
▶ PCR correction and timing alignment

Ensures low latency and full signal integrity.

Playout & Control

Flexible playout control for linear channels:

▶ File and live stream playback
▶ Scheduled and event-driven switching
▶ SCTE-based automation
▶ Unified control via Air Manager

Local Insertions

Precise content replacement in compressed streams:

▶ Local ad insertion and regionalization
▶ Blackout and content substitution
▶ Frame-accurate TS splicing

Recording

Simultaneous recording of streams:

▶ Native MPEG-TS recording
▶ Time-shift and catch-up TV
▶ Multi-channel recording

Output & Delivery

Delivery to broadcast and OTT environments:

▶ IP outputs: UDP, RTP, SRT, RIST, Zixi
▶ OTT: HLS, MPEG-DASH
▶ ASI output and CDN delivery

Integrated Ecosystem

SL NEO Compressed Video Playout, Recording & Local Insertions is fully integrated into the SL NEO Media Platform — a modular, software-defined environment where transport-stream playout, recording, monitoring, automation, and distribution modules work together in real time.

Additional modules — including Easy Muxer, Transport Stream Failover, Changeover, and the SL NEO Base Module — can be combined to build complete MPEG-TS playout, local insertion, redundancy, and distribution workflows.

Easy Muxer
For transport-stream multiplexing, service configuration, and output preparation
Transport Stream Failover
For automatic switching between primary and backup MPEG-TS sources
Changeover
For automated signal monitoring and switching between main and backup paths
SL NEO Base Module
For centralized system coordination, management, and control

Use Cases

Regional & Local Ad Insertion
Insert local advertising or regional programming into existing MPEG-TS services based on schedules, SCTE markers, or external control commands.
IP Cable / IPTV Playout
Operate compressed television channels directly in MPEG-TS over IP environments without unnecessary decoding and re-encoding.
FAST & Thematic Channels
Build scheduled linear channels from precompressed media with automated playout, live switching, and local content insertion.
Live Event & Regional Breakaways
Temporarily replace network programming with local or regional live content while maintaining continuous transport-stream output.
Transport Stream Recording
Record incoming MPEG-TS services for archive, delayed playback, monitoring, or later redistribution.
Redundant Distribution Workflows
Combine playout with failover, changeover, and multiplexing modules to maintain reliable transmission across primary and backup paths.
