SkyLark Expands DVB Subtitle Workflows with TTML and OCR

September 17, 2026

SkyLark has significantly expanded its DVB subtitle workflows, adding end-to-end support for DVB TTML and OCR-based text recognition for traditional DVB bitmap subtitles.

DVB TTML subtitles based on ETSI EN 303 560 can now be handled throughout the workflow — from capture and recording to playout, remultiplexing, extraction, preview, and transcoding.

Transport-stream capture recognizes DVB TTML streams and preserves them alongside the recorded video. During playout, TTML streams can be passed through from source media or generated from captions and subtitle files.

SkyLark can also encode caption content as DVB TTML for transport-stream output, with configurable language, styling, positioning, and stream mapping. Easy Muxer recognizes DVB TTML streams and can remultiplex them while preserving the appropriate signalling.

For existing DVB bitmap subtitles, SkyLark now adds OCR processing. Bitmap subtitles can be converted into text using optical character recognition, allowing them to be extracted as SRT files, used as a caption source during transcoding, and displayed as text in supported preview and monitoring workflows.

OCR language selection follows the language of the subtitle stream and supports multiple writing systems through configurable language data.

Subtitle handling has also been reorganized in the playout configuration. CEA-608/708, Teletext, DVB Subtitles, and DVB TTML each have their own configuration and Insert Captions policy, allowing different subtitle technologies to coexist on the same channel and be controlled independently.

Together, these improvements provide a more complete subtitle workflow for broadcasters working with legacy bitmap formats, modern TTML-based delivery, multilingual services, and mixed broadcast distribution environments.
